Raising Funds for the British Heart Foundation

Two of Hazeley's team are helping to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation.

Our Construction Director, Karl Handscombe, and our Senior Surveryor, Gary Jones, are joining forces with thousands of other supporters to take on the classic Bournemouth Pier to Pier Swim.  Both are in training to take on this 1.4 mile open water challenge in the English Channel on Sunday 14 July 2019.  The swim starts at Bournemouth Pier and finishes at Boscombe Pier.  Karl is a veteran of the challenge as this will be the seventh year in a row that he has taken part.

A few years ago, Gary was lucky enough to survive a condition called Acute Myo-pericarditis.  This is where a virus, such as a common cold, attacks the heart and surrounding tissue.  It is a condition which is rare, but it accounts for some 5% to 10 % of sudden deaths in young adults and sometimes it’s only symptoms are feeling like you have a cold by which time it is too late.  Its effects are very debilitating in the short term and in some rare cases can lead to heart transplants and / or terminal life illnesses.  It often effects those with particularly healthy hearts and the effects on families can be total devastation.

Gary was extremely lucky and has made a full recovery.
